Hi,

I post this here, since this might be useful for Ubuntu users.

The problem was an ancient version of automake. Although GiNaC checks
for the version of automake (and autoconf), apparently some very old
versions of automake ignore this check, hence the problem. Installing
required version of automake (>= 1.7, as specified in the INSTALL file)
fixes the problem.
